Duolingo

On-call email developer

I work with Duolingo on an ongoing basis to develop highly customized email notifications, newsletters and performance updates for their users, often with dynamic content based on user data. All emails are tested across 100+ clients, browsers and operating systems before going out to 15 million+ users.

“Bryce has been my go-to email developer for almost 2 years now. During that time he's coded dozens of emails for us based off of custom Figma files, often with complex elements like charts personalized to individual user data. He is dependable, communicative, and knowledgeable about the nuances of mail clients and general HTML limitations.”

Coding emails is like building for the web in 1998: a hot mess of nested HTML tables

Every email client renders things a little differently. This one doesn’t support media queries; that one doesn’t do border radius; this one over here ignores padding. Outlook uses Microsoft Word to render HTML, a decision that generates the GDP of a small European nation for email developers (thanks?). A common experience: create the email, see that it works in everything except Outlook, iterate through 10 versions until Outlook is fixed, ship it.
