Bilingual build for a Canadian sugar mainstay that’s older than confederation
A great philosopher once quipped: “If a great recipe is never cooked, is it still delicious?”. Can’t recall who, but they may well have been referencing Redpath Sugar’s previous site. With over 700 recipes in French and English, housed in multiple sites and arranged behind a desperately slow filter system, their key content remained largely hidden. I worked with Nourish to create a unified bilingual website, bringing together their commercial and personal properties into a single, cohesive experience. It features an intuitive new filter system, lightening-quick page loads and an approachable, distinctly Canadian feel. Sweet, sweet success.
A custom web scraper in Python saves dozens of hours of manual migration
Unfortunately, I was unable to get a good data export of the recipe content from the old site. Manual migration was always an option, but I very much wanted to avoid placing that burden on my colleagues. So instead, I wrote a custom web scraper in Python to hit every recipe page, French and English, and extract exactly the content and images I needed in the proper format, with the correct naming conventions. I was able to build what I needed in a day, iterating over about a dozen versions with Claude and Cursor. Certainly beats copying over 1,500 recipes manually.
